About GHK-Cu Scalp Solution

GHK (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine) is a copper peptide found in human plasma that readily binds with copper, forming the complex GHK-Cu. Originally discovered in the 1970s, GHK-Cu has garnered attention for its potential protective and regenerative properties. GHK-Cu is widely used in hair product formulations due to its potential to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair thickness.[1]

Mechanisms of Action

GHK-Cu may support hair health by acting on several biological pathways in the scalp. It may stimulate the formation of new blood vessels around hair follicles by increasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production, which may improve nutrient supply essential for hair growth. GHK-Cu may also prevent premature hair follicle regression by inhibiting transforming growth factor beta, potentially prolonging the hair growth phase. Additionally, it may support dermal papilla cells by promoting their growth and reducing cell death, which may help maintain and support hair follicles.[2]

Contraindications & Precautions

GHK-Cu formulations are generally well-tolerated; however, it is recommended that individuals with sensitive skin or scalp should perform a patch test prior to regular application. Users should discontinue use if they experience any signs of allergic reactions, such as redness, hives, or itchiness.[3] While copper can potentially cause skin irritation or toxicity, in vitro studies suggest that GHK-Cu complexes may have a lower likelihood of inducing these effects.[4] However, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before using any new product on the skin or scalp.

The use of GHK-Cu has not been established in pediatric, pregnant, and breastfeeding individuals.
