About Bacteriostatic Water Injection
Bacteriostatic water injection (benzyl alcohol) (Hospira®) is a sterile solution used for diluting or dissolving medications for injection. It contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which may help inhibit the growth of bacteria in the water.[1]
Due to the presence of benzyl alcohol, bacteriostatic water should not be used for epidural or intrathecal procedures. Bacteriostatic water should be stored at room temperature and discarded if it becomes discolored or contaminated.[2]
Store this medication at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) and away from heat, moisture and light. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Throw away any unused medicine after the beyond use date. Do not flush unused medications or pour down a sink or drain.
